Tata Steel Chess Round 8: Anish Giri stuns Shakhriyar Mamedyarov to go joint top; Viswanathan Anand plays out draw

A big and sudden change occurred at the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of Round 8 of the Tata Steel Masters. The Dutch No 1, Anish Giri succeeded in bringing down Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who had been on a roll winning his last three games. With this win, Giri not only added a full point to his total score but also joined Mamedyarov as the tournament leader. You are here: Latest News Sports News Tata Steel Chess Round 8: Anish Giri stuns Shakhriyar Mamedyarov to go joint top; Viswanathan Anand plays out draw Sports Aditya Pai Jan 22, 2018 17:47:40 IST Comment 0 Tweet A big and sudden change occurred at the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of Round 8 of the Tata Steel Masters. The Dutch No 1, Anish Giri succeeded in bringing down Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who had been on a roll winning his last three games. With this win, Giri not only added a full point to his total score but also joined Mamedyarov as the tournament leader. In the game, Mamedyarov misplayed the opening from the black side of a Symmetrical English and allowed Giri to run all over him from the very start. The game did not last too long; Mamedyarov resigned in merely 32 moves. Perhaps, Mamedyarov’s resignation came a bit early but with the position he had at hand, it’s hard to blame him. Mamedyarov’s loss also gave Magnus Carlsen the chance to catch up with the tournament leaders but the world champ was having a tough day at the office. In his game against the English GM Gawain Jones, Carlsen had blundered a full piece in a Sicilian Dragon with no sign of compensation whatsoever. But even though Carlsen’s compensation was unclear, the world champ knew the only way out was to grab the initiative and so he did. Jones tried simplifying the position by exchanging queens. But in doing this, he allowed Carlsen too much initiative. Soon, Jones’ position went from being better to equal to worse. Whether this was a voodoo trick or some other form of black magic is hard to tell but Carlsen managed to trick his opponent and bring home the full point.

Top five next opponents for Errol Spence

1. Keith Thurman It’s the obvious fight to unify major titles at welterweight. Thurman has been inactive but after beating Danny Garcia in March of 2017 holds the WBA and WBC crowns. With Spence the IBF 147lbs champion, this would be the big fight for the welterweight division. 2. Terence Crawford Crawford has not fought yet at welterweight but he’s that good he only needs to announce he’s moving up in weight to be considered one of the best in the division. He’s skilful, brilliant and a dangerous puncher. Just like Spence actually. Errol Spence 3. Canelo Alvarez Errol Spence is a potential superstar but he needs a super-fight. With the retirement of Floyd Mayweather, there is a lack of superstars close to him in weight. Perhaps though he could move up to a division (or two) to try to get a fight with hugely popular Mexican Canelo Alvarez. 4. Manny Pacquiao Manny Pacquiao unexpectedly surrendered his WBO welterweight world title to little known Australian Jeff Horn. Pacquiao is long past his best and it could well be an ugly fight if he met Spence at this stage of his career. But “Pacman” is just the kind of star name Spence needs. 5. Sadam Ali The conqueror of Miguel Cotto is now a world champion at light-middleweight, the division above, but could be an appealing challenge for Spence in New York.

Upset Fans Chant 'Bulls--t' At WWE RAW At Manhattan Center, JR And Jerry Lawler Fall Asleep (Photo)

Fans at the Manhattan Center for tonight's RAW were upset by the lack of action at the venue. There was not much going on throughout the night at the arena, and there was no Tron setup so that fans could watch RAW being broadcast from the Barclays Center. As seen in the video above, the fans grew impatient at one point and started a "bullsh-t" chant. The Miz did appear at the Manhattan Center after winning the Intercontinental Championship at the Barclays Center earlier in the night. There was also a match between Lince Dorado and Mustafa Ali, with Ali picking up the victory. Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler apparently had a hard time during tonight's proceedings at the Manhattan Center as they appeared to fall asleep, as seen below:

No. 10 Tar Heels drop another ACC road game

BLACKSBURG, VA. The road has not been kind to North Carolina in ACC play this season. Crossing the border into Virginia, in particular, has been an issue for the Tar Heels, who lost 80-69 at Virginia Tech on Monday night. No. 10 UNC (16-5, 5-3 ACC) lost for the third time in four ACC road games and for the second time in Virginia. The Cavaliers dumped the Heels 61-49 on Jan. 6. This loss was just a sped-up version. Same state, same result, some effort and intensity problems for UNC.

Live: Australian Open 2018, day nine at Melbourne Park

AFTER a night of upsets that saw Hyeon Chung topple Novak Djokovic and Tennys Sandgren defeat Dominic Thiem, the top men’s seeds will want to see normality resume when they take to the court on Tuesday. Fresh from his four-set win over Nick Kyrgios on Sunday night, World No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov takes on Brit Kyle Edmund this afternoon on Rod Laver Arena. Kyrgios told the Bulgarian to “believe” as he shoots for his first major crown while Edmund will be hoping he has enough gas left in the tank after playing two five-setters and a four-setter in his past three matches. Top seed Rafael Nadal surrendered his first set of the tournament to Diego Schwartzman in his last start and will be wary of Marin Cilic, who came back from a set down to defeat Pablo Carreno Busta in the round of 16. On the women’s side unseeded Belgian Elise Mertens continued her dream run at Melbourne Park with a straight sets victory over World No. 4 Elina Svitolina. Caroline Wozniacki — fresh from hitting her first ever successful tweener in a match — may need to pull out some more tricks to overcome veteran Carla Suarez Navarro in the other quarter-final of the day.
